The Amazon is by far the richest river in the world. It traverses the Amazon basin, which is surrounded by tropical rain forest in the west of the Andes, to the Atlantic Ocean.
The small Ecuador is considered the most species-rich country on earth. In the humid and hot climate, magnificent tropical rainforests thrive east and west of the Andes.
In eastern Ecuador, the “Oriente”, lie the rainforests of the Amazon basin. The almost 100,000 km² large region is sparsely populated.
The plantain, also vegetable banana, span. plátano, is a basic food in many tropical and subtropical regions of America, Africa and Asia.
Plantains have traditionally been cultivated for centuries by the Native peoples of the Amazon region.
In contrast to the dessert banana, it is only in the fully ripe state, recognizable by the (almost) completely black discolored shell and the soft pulp, raw edible. It is usually boiled or cut into strips or slices and fried.
The cultivation of manioc is widespread because of its starchy root tubers. Originally from South America, it was used by Native Americans for nutrition even before the discovery of America by the Europeans. Meanwhile, it is grown worldwide in many parts of the tropics and subtropics.
Manioc is known under different names. The term manioc comes from the word Maniot from the originally Tupi-Guarani language of the Brazilian Atlantic coast . In Brazil, manioc is today referred to as Mandioca, which is derived from the name of the woman Mandi-Oca – her body is said to have sprung from the manioc plant, according to a legend of the Brazilian Native Americans. The name Cassava comes from the Arawak word Kasabi and the word Yuca comes from the language of the Caribbean.
With the el origen BanaFritas and ManaFritas we wanted to develop from the beginning crisps that deserve the title “el origen”.
That’s why we only use organic certified plantains and manioc roots for the el origen BanaFritas and ManaFritas, protecting nature, sustainable grown and ecologically harvested by regional small farmers in the rural areas of Ecuador.
The only other ingredient we also use is certified organic sunflower oil and – depending on the variety – a little sea salt.
Good quality is only available with the best ingredients – and without additives that original enjoyment does not need.
For our extra thin, extra crispy organic banana crisps, plantains are cut into extra thin slices and – natural or lightly salted – processed together with certified organic sunflower oil to extra thin, extra crispy crisps.
